PERSONAL STATEMENT
Being a student-athlete taught me a strong work ethic and self-discipline. As a high achiever, I learned to be organized, focused, and effective at time management. I learned being a leader begins with what I do and how I do it. I lead by example and consistently give my best effort. Finally, I learned to maintain a healthy balance and make time for myself.

Recommendation: I am honored to be writing this letter of recommendation on behalf of Taylor Fleury. I have known Taylor since his freshman year when he decided to go out for the freshman football team. Since then, I have seen Taylor grow into a hard working, responsible student-athlete who understands the importance of education and strives to challenge himself mentally and physically.

Taylor is an excellent example of what I consider to be the most challenging part of high school today, to be both a student and an athlete. Taylor was a senior wide receiver and defensive back during the 2011 football season. During that time I watched him progress as a player and grow as a man. He put in over one hundred hours of practice time after school when many students his age go home. After this grueling activity, Taylor then had to fulfill the second part of his commitment – education. Taylor excelled in that area as well. In 2011 Taylor was named a San Diego County All Academic football player with a 4.529 GPA.

The dedication and determination that Taylor shows in the classroom he also exhibits in anything that he involves himself in. The football field is no exception. As a two-way starter and team captain, he led the league with 10 touchdowns on 36 receptions and 835 yards in nine games for the Division 1 Granite Hills High School. He received the team’s Most Valuable Player award and was voted Grossmont All League.

Taylor is an extremely well rounded individual who succeeds in academics and sports, and is active in campus life. I believe the achievements that he has reached in high school will help him to excel in college, both on the field and in the classroom. Taylor will make a significant contribution to any school and any team.

Recommendation: During the last 25 years, I‘ve had the wonderful pleasure and opportunity to coach many young men in the sport of Wrestling. Occasionally, an exceptional young man comes across my path that exudes the trifecta of a blue chip athlete: exceptional athleticism, highly intelligent, and hard working. Taylor is that individual.

Taylor’s exceptional athleticism was clearly demonstrated during this year’s wrestling season. He started this sport with essentially no real wrestling experience. His first six weeks or so were split between the Junior Varsity and Varsity levels – earning some success, but more importantly learning the challenges associated with wrestling. By the second half of the season, Taylor was competing solely at the Varsity level. During this time, he became increasingly successful on the mat, defeating several seasoned wrestlers who he had lost to earlier in the year. In fact, it is rare for any wrestler to experience success during their first year of this grueling sport. More striking, however, is the level of success this young man achieved. Taylor placed in the top six in San Diego’s Division I CIF regional tournament, enabling him to compete at the Masters Tournament the following week. In all my years of coaching, I have never had an athlete, such as Taylor, achieve so much in such a short time (literally less than 5 months).

One’s natural athleticism is important. However, of greater significance, for any individual who has a goal of obtaining a college degree is their ability to perform academically. This young man unquestionably shows proficiency in the classroom. He has challenged himself in his studies by enrolling in some of our schools most rigorous Honors and AP Classes, earning a remarkable GPA of 4.55, ranking him 15 out of 615 Juniors. This GPA is quite notable when considering the amount of additional time Taylor spends preparing and participating in various sports throughout the year.

A reliable measure that all coaches and teachers use to evaluate a student’s potential success is the apparent willingness of that individual to commit to their own success, or simply put, one’s work ethic. Taylor has consistently proven himself in the athletic arena and in the classroom, fully committing his attention and effort to achieve at a higher level. His dedication to excellence is outstanding.

I sincerely believe Taylor Fleury will have an immediate impact on any program that he participates in, and I am pleased to give him my highest recommendation.
