PERSONAL STATEMENT
I was initially introduced to tennis at the age of twelve. My interest in sports began with travel soccer. My interest shifted from soccer to tennis when I began playing tennis with my sister. Transitioning from a team sport to an individual sport was a change, but the more I played tennis, I developed a true passion for the sport. Playing tennis has taught me the value of being an individual player and a team player.

My name is Andrea Lord. I am a former Division I Women’s Head Coach for IUPUI at Indianapolis. I also have been a teaching pro for 10 years and the Director of Tournaments for the USTA Mid-Atlantic. I am writing on behalf of Brianna Miah, a player I have been coaching for a year now. I have seen Brianna grow from someone with an energetic attitude, great footwork and a lot of pace on her shots into a player who is also able to use all parts of the court and play around her strengths and the effective all court game she has worked hard to develop. Brianna has shown she is able to strategize effectively, utilizing the tools she has developed so well over the past year to create smarter points where she is in control of her matches from the first point. Every aspect of her game has seen tremendous improvement. Her shot selection has matured immensely and her tenacious demeanor on the court has only gotten more intense as she has improved over the course of the past year.

Ms. Miah’s goals are very clear and she is extremely organized and works harder than any player I have coached towards reaching them. Brianna’s attitude doesn’t waver. I see her three times a week, and I never have to guess what type of practice will take place. Her work ethic is consistent and she stays positive through any type of adversity. Brianna has made both technical and tactical changes within her game and these changes have taken place rapidly, largely in part to her coachable nature as well as her natural athletic ability. When she is asked to do something, I have confidence that it will be done to exceed expectation. Quite often, she comes up with ideas on her own to supplement what I have asked of her, which shows me her personal dedication and commitment to being the best player she can become. Brianna isn’t afraid to ask questions and is always eager to put the extra work in on and off the court to improve both her physical and her mental game as well.

Ms. Miah has an upbeat and energetic personality. She comes to each practice with a smile on her face, and is always ready to work hard. It is evident that she truly enjoys all aspects of being a competitive tennis player. Brianna is very unique in that she has taken the initiative at a very young age to handle most matters pertaining to her tennis on her own. This is a quality any coach will appreciate in knowing she feels responsible for her own success and has paved the way to continue this mature approach throughout her collegiate tennis career. After spending this past year working with Ms. Miah and watching her develop into the wonderful person and player she has become, my love for coaching the sport of tennis has been reaffirmed. It is with great pleasure that I give Brianna Miah my highest recommendation. I know she will be a wonderful asset to any program who is lucky enough to have her.
